Hidden Farm Bill Pie
This series shows how mainstream media and other critics of agribusiness and cheap corn, etc. end up supporting the very zero price floor policies and programs that cause the problems.
It's often said that the Nutrition Title is the biggest, but that's only when you look at the Visible Farm Bill, not for the whole farm bill.
The blue bar, farm subsidies, is supposed to be bad, but that's an opinion that leaves out the hidden context.
This is the scale that I use for further bar charts. Here, above zero, we see farm bill spending, including subsidies, but subsidies, (blue bar), compensate for massive HIDDEN reductions (NOT shown here).
Here's another pie, the HIDDEN Farm Bill. It's different in 2 ways. 1. It's bigger; 2. It's a REDUCTION for farmers, not a benefit.
Congress reduced (1953-1995) and eliminated (1996-2012) price floors and set asides, running most farmers out of business and creating a need for subsidies. Solution: NFFC's "Food from Family Farms Act."
This shows results for Farm Commodities. The Net Result is the sum of the reductions (Negative number) and subsidies (positive number). For 2007, all subsidy spending ($14 billion) is only 12% of the 10 reductions ($119 billion) leaving farmers $105 bill
The Net Result (purple) is the sum of the reductions for 10 major commodities (aqua, Negative number) and all Farm Bill spending (blue) to various causes for 2007 (positive number).
The solution is to eliminate the need for subsidies and eliminate the hidden reductions for Agribusiness and Against Farmers, the "Food from Family Farms Act."
Both the Senate & the House, and the Food Movement and Sustainable Agriculture Movement, are continuing these injustices for 2012, as they did in 2008. Join the Farm Justice Movement.
