sustainer 2008-10-10T00:00:00Z Last night (Thursday) United Students Against Sweatshops held an immediate conference call with union organizers and workers at the Jerzees factory in Choloma, Honduras, which is owned by Russell Athletic and Fruit of the Loom. The workers told us about their struggle to organize a union, thanked us for helping them do it, and then updated us on the recent attacks on their union. Bosses have split the workforce, blamed the union, blacklisted workers and organizers, and have the caused union leaders to receive death threats. The companies have stated that the economic crisis is forcing them to cut back on production, thus, they must shut down their only unionized factory in Honduras. This is an obvious attempt on the part of these businesses to showcase to workers what happens when workers get organized and demand rights. The Honduran workers had some immediate demands for us, and USAS will be discussing what else we can do. For now, we need to spread the news about the war on workers in Choloma, Honduras, because the corporate media will not.
