This film, prinipally set during the Spanish Civil War, follows the tale of an idealistic Liverpudlian who goes to fight with the International Brigades against Franco. Whilst emphasising the power of socialism to bring many nationalities together, the gritty social realism means that Loach does not shy away from exposing harsher truths. This nuanced recounting of this conflict does not, however, diminish the commitment of Loach to delivering a socialist narrative. In this era in which socialism has been denounced as dead or dying by its opponents, Loach demonstrates that the class war is still raging, and that there are those who are still willing to put up a fight.
