What he describes is going on in the US to a similar degree. Just like how the Nazi's had "a kind of tacit cooperation and interaction" with the French intellectuals and military officiers, the FBI has the same sort of thing going on with US intellectuals. Also, like french society, most of the US society is collaborationist. That is they are doing all kind of secret tasks and errands for the FBI.
