Not ending war

By Wilson, Brad at Sep 09, 2008 05:31 AM

I find Zinn\'s conclusion to be unsatisfactory. He suggests that we do something small and non heroic to end war. But where has war been ended? Where in history is a successful model? Yes things in history have changed. Yes, in hindsight the changes were made up, at least in part, of small things. I don\'t see, however, that a call for these very small sacrifices is an appropriate response to the horrendous problem he set forth for us prior to the end. The slaughter goes on at a rapid rate. Ok, that was not the purpose of this piece. The purpose was not to focus on what to do. Still, in a sentence or two, I can imagine much better conclusion. What to do? The content of this does not exist. I don\'t see people being very successful. Ok, yes, the attitudes toward Iraq have changed dramatically. Perhaps that\'s unprecedented. Ok, some Democratic Party candidates have opposed the war (a mainstream result). But for context, I don\'t see those changes. Meanwhile the \"success\" of the surge, (not that they found WMDs!) os gaining ground. I\'m not saying that what he says is false, only that it\'s inadequate. We can do so much more, if we learn how, as I\'ve argued in my blog. (http://www.zcommunications.org/blog/view/1822)
