Blogs are a familiar feature on the internet - where users post content in an accumulating manner, with comments, and search options, etc. They facilitate expression and exploration, and via attached comments, also debate and synthesis.

Navigating Blogs

Our blogs are quite powerful. Each writer can post, as is typically the case. Sustainers who have the option can also post, however. All Blogs appear in the blog system, and sometimes also in content boxes the top page of ZNet - and always via the left menu of the top page - and can be found via searches, etc.

Commenting on blogs follows the blogs, attached at the bottom, and blog comments, like all others, are also visible in many places that show comments including in the forum system. In addition, the entire blog system gathers content for everyone - but one can look at the accumulating content in many ways.

  • For example one can look at one writer's efforts - so one is seeing what is effectively a blog system for that one writer, or Sustainer.
  • One can also look at the content by topic, seeing blogs that are tagged as being about a certain topic - or place, as well. Thus, when doing that, it is a blog system about a topic, or a place, with many contributors.
  • One can look at only writer blogs, or only sustainer blogs, as well.
  • One can look at blogs for particular Groups, too.

All this is easily done using the left menu. Searches allow even more variables and refinements.


Creating Blog Posts

If you are a Sustainer with permission, and are logged in, you will see a link in the left menu for you to post a blog - and you can use that to post one, and then tag it various ways (such as with a topic or place, or a group tag), and once you do, it is in the system with you as the author.

You can also use the console button to the left to post a blog - anytime and from anywhere in the site, as long as you are logged in.

Meanwhile, enjoy the blogs - and, by the way, if you are a Free Member or a Sustainer with a ZSpace page, of course you can put one or more content boxes on it, pulling blog links of any sort you may want to filter for, for example, by you or by your friends or by others - and by topic, about places, for groups, etc.

The Official 911 Story

The simple reason why I presume that the official story is probably true is that it seems to me by far the most credible one. I've explained why in earlier posts, and also why the whole matter is very far from high priority for me. Since there is such a flood of letters about this matter, mostly to me personally, perhaps it is worth adding something that I've left out because I do not want to become embroiled in what seem to me pointless discussions, diverting energy from matters that seem to me far more important. One of these is to focus attention on the Bush administration's ongoing contributions to enhancing the risk of terrorism, including very serious terrorist attacks against the US. Even if the cyberspace and other conclusions about 9/11 were credible they would not begin to compare with Bush administration actions that are hardly controversial and that have or threaten far more hideous effects. In comparison with these clear cases, for which evidence is overwhelming from the most respectable mainstream sources, the involvement of the Bush administration in 9/11, if it could be supported, would amount to very little. To take an obvious example, consider the invasion of Iraq. Quite apart from the massive crimes against Iraqis, the invasion was undertaken with the expectation, since amply confirmed, that it would increase the threat of jihadist terror of the kind that the Reaganites organized in the 1980s, as well as proliferation. Former defense secretaries (including McNamara) and prominent strategic analysts estimate the likelihood of nuclear terror in the US at about 50% in the next decade: alongside that, and its likely aftermath, 9/11 would pale into insignificance. And that's the least of it. The policies of aggressive militarism and "transformation of the military" are, as predicted, driving potential rivals to react in ways that greatly enhance the risk of possibly terminal nuclear war, maybe by accident, maybe by leaking of WMD technology to terrorists, maybe in other ways. All of these matters are well-established, rarely discussed, and vastly more significant that any possible Bush administration involvement in 9/11. …I might perhaps add that this whole matter reminds of a DOD document on declassification a few years ago. It suggests that "interesting declassified material" such as information about the JFK assassination could be released and even posted on the internet as a "diversion," which might "reduce the unrestrained public appetite for `secrets' by providing good faith distraction material." The idea, according to the (outstanding) British intelligence analyst who published the document, is that if investigators are absorbed with the grassy knoll they won't probe into serious areas where they are unwelcome.

CHOMSKY FEARS 9/11 DEBATE

It's all fine and good that Mr. Chomsky confronts Israel for its phony justification for mass murder in Lebanon [  http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2006/09/345826.shtml ] -- an obvious attempt by him to regain the trust of the anti-war movement, which is finally embracing the 9/11 Truth movement -- but let us *NEVER FORGET* where he stands on the most important issue of our time: the state-terror apparatus that is plunging the world into a totalitarian fascist nightmare.

When questioned on Dr. Hesham Tillawi's online video program about his stance on the 9/11 issue, Chomsky timidly regurgitates the official line by saying that the version we are force-fed by the mainstream media is "pretty much what happened", with 19 Arab hijackers responsible for the planning and execution of the attacks. He claims that he hasn't seen any "credible evidence" to suggest otherwise.

At this point in the interview, the informed viewer and reader of his work will ask: "Where has Chomsky been for the last five years? Has he not heard of the work of Scholars for 9/11 Truth, particularly the work of engineer Dr. Judy Wood, physicist Dr. Stephen Jones, philosopher Dr. James Fetzer and theologian Dr. David Griffin? Has he not read about Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's appeal to the world for an investigation into 9/11?"

CHOMSKY'S LACK OF EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT HIS 9/11 POSITION

How is it possible that he hasn't “seen any credible evidence” when the Scholars” work has been posted all over the internet and has even made the corporate press because of the controversy it is spawning? Is it not arrogance on his part to dismiss these academics as "lacking credibility"? Where is Chomsky's evidence for this dismissal of his colleagues' work?

Instead he cites an imaginary and illusory body of "thousands of highly qualified engineers" with the "appropriate credentials" that can apparently prove how the official collapse model is scientifically sound. Who are these engineers? Why won't they, along with the NIST engineers, debate the peer-reviewed science put forth by the Scholars? This group of brave scientists and intellectuals not only possess "appropriate credentials" and backgrounds, but, together, have systematically dismantled the FEMA, NIST and 9/11 Commission cover-up reports. Is it not revealing that these government "scientists" collectively refuse to publicly debate Scholars for 9/11 Truth!!!

So where does Chomsky position himself within this debate? Why is he openly accusing the 9/11 truth movement of "wasting an enormous amount of time and energy", that "could be better focused on more important issues"? What issues are more important than the events that have led us into an era of "permanent war"? Why is he ignoring the world public's call for an international and independent public inquiry?

NECESSARY QUESTIONS ON UNNECESSARY ILLUSIONS

In light of all this, we are forced to ask some very unpleasant questions with regards to Chomsky's political and moral agenda, as well as his ideological allegiances. Does he know something about the Israeli connection to terrorism and 9/11 and is he afraid to make it public? (Do recall Sharon's explicit declaration on October 3rd, 2001, that "We, the Jewish people, control America and the Americans know it." [IAP News])

Is Chomsky an ideological supporter of Zionism, as claimed by Dr. Norman G. Finkelstein, author of The Holocaust Industry, in an interview given to Snowshoe Films? [ Watch "Straussians, My Behind"  http://www.snowshoefilms.com/palestine.html ] If he is an ideological Zionist, then is he covering up the Israeli power-elite's involvement in international terrorism? Isn't it interesting, if not telling, that he avoids all discussion of the Federal Reserve and its Zionist control when he discusses economic power in America? Is this not lying-by-omission, something that he exposes with regard to the corporate media in his book, "Manufacturing Consent"?

Is his stance with regard to 9/11 and "terrorism" not an indirect means of "manufacturing consent" for the "War on Terror"? If so, Chomsky is complicit in the very power system and war machine that he has always condemned. Is it not significant that he has remained employed, despite his dissident activities, by one of the largest weapons developers in the United States, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he began working directly under the U.S. Army during the 1950s. But a few dozen guys hiding in a cave could arm themselves with boxcutters and make the most expensive, extensive and hi-tech intelligence and military systems on Earth look so incompetent as to beggar belief (which then promoted key players and demoted no-one), that's believable and "most likely"? I'm a Libertarian (generally anti-government and pro-market) but overall I have tremendous respect for Chomsky, respect where it is due. I strongly agree with the previous poster though, if the Neocons could be proven to have allowed or even aided 9/11 deliberately, it blows their entire agenda clean out of the water. Ethics or no ethics most Americans only care about Americans - prove the government has done to them what it has done for years to others and yeah, you'd get real change. If Chomsky accepts the incredibly unlikely, if not completely impossible official story, the one full of more holes than Swiss cheese, fine. If however he considers that implausible tale "more likely" then it'd be nice if he actually talked about the evidence against it. B.

It is also considered highly probable, if not certain, that the Nazis deliberately arranged for a sucker to burn down the Reichstag (parliment) which is how they came to power. The false creation of a "threat" and then grabbing power has a lengthy history among governments and leaders, including American. Add to all that the fact the US government did actually conspire to create false terrorist attacks, including on American citizens and blowing up an airliner, as a pretext to invading Cuba. Note also Iraq was partly a US puppet, Saddam's real "WMD" was that he started selling oil in euros, threatening the current monopoly of the petrodollar. Note also, somewhat Germany or Argentina just before attacking the Falklands, that the US economy is tanking, though right now it looks good the huge deficits and hidden inflation is major. So we have a government desperately trying to hide an inflationary economy that's on the ropes (historically a classic time for war) with the real risk of being shoved right off the No1 spot via the loss off the petrodollar, which has actively conspired to use fake terrorism to wage war previously, which has previously allowed attacks on Americans to wage war, which has already planned the invasion of both Iraq and Afghanistan, what fed us all obvious BS about WMD, which created a scenario where the impossible could occur on 9/11 because they set up training to cope with the very thing they claim they could never have imagined...

Part 2: he threat of airliner suicide attacks that could never possibly be imagined was the subject that day, and at that time, for secret military drills "simulating" hijacked airliners doing exactly what the actual hijacked airliners did. That explains the mysterious stand-downs, people thought it was part of the drill, a drill that included placing false radar blips on ATC screens and also flying remote-controlled airliners. Somone said many US citizens don't know of the 3rd building to fall, even fewer are aware of these drills. Most of the named hijackers have turned up alive, none of them were on the actual flight list. Huh? There is compelling evidence that the original Pearl Harbor attack was deliberately allowed to occur, as Americans were loath to engage in yet another European war. In fact it was provoked to occur and then allowed to happen (not to mention American aircraft were already engaged in conflict with Japanese forces at the time, unknown to the public)

There is a huge volume of inconsitencies and outright proven lies by the US government regarding 9/11. Doing your own research would be best but here's a very brief rundown: Major oil companies and the US wanted an oil pipeline through Afghanistan, primarily to continue the active policy of cutting off or making life difficult for Russia. The local warlords were offered large volumes of cash but in the end the deal didn't go through. They were told they could have ".. a carpet of cash or a carpet of bombs". Bombs it was then with an attack planned for November - which is exactly when it actually happened. As someone said, the invasion of Iraq was already planned, again over oil, including PNAC openly stating that oil was a more important issue than Saddam. This was well before 9/11.

I've noticed a similar thing with supposedly 'dissident' commentators circling around the proposition of 9/11 being 'blowback' from investing in al-Qaida. Chomsky has often been the one to point out and criticize falsely dissident opinions, which is why I'm surprised at his reluctance to support criticism of the official explanation for 9/11. That being said, the false opinions are usually being publicised by corporate media, rather than the so-called 'progressives', and so are perhaps easier to point out and attack. It wouldn't be so bad, but a lot of 'progressives' seem to think that without the support of figureheads like Chomsky, the 9/11 Truth Movement is only worthy of, at best, polite but puzzled acceptance, and at worst, utter disdain.

In terms of preserving one's credibility, I'm sorry but that ship has sailed. Once Prof. David Ray Griffin wrote "The New Pearl Harbor" with an excellent foreward by Prof. Richard Falk (Princeton), the door was open, and some notable individuals have taken advantage of the opening: Morgan Reynolds, Paul Craig Roberts, Ray McGovern. In fact, one could easily argue that the door was open once Andreas von Bulow (former German cabinet minister) publicly challenged the official story shortly after the attacks. For some, I think it has more to do with embarrassment over blindly accepting the truth of the official story and basing much of one's work on that assumption for the last several years. BTW, Griffin's second book, "The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions," is a must read. His talk at UW-Madison was broadcast by C-Span a few months ago. 9/11 is the foundation for the global domination project of the neocons and far-right elements of the US state apparatus. Every other scandal will be short-lived, a mere temporary setback for the PNAC agenda. Thanks to the complicity of the corporate media, after a week or two it will be business as usual. We have seen this clearly with the tragedy in New Orleans. The only hope for the world is the exposure of the truth behind 9/11. This neocon deck of cards is built on the official 9/11 story. Pull the 9/11 card and...

I think the relationship is far from abnormal. The UK is the closest ally of the US, which is in many respects the most powerful nation. That is a very advantageous position for the UK. As for the second, seemingly unconnected question: from what I've read, there would probably be a state of emergency declared, but after that, who knows. Perhaps an Iranian patsy, then invasion, Russia and China aggravated, nuclear stand-off...all on the backdrop of high petroleum prices....not a pretty sight.

I'm a huge fan of Mr Chomsky's work, but I think that Mr Chomsky needs to go through some of the evidence accumulated through thousands of man-hours of research, and then lend his support to the - now quite mainstream - attempt for a new investigation into 9/11. Like many have already said, I consider 9/11 to be the cornerstone of our current political environment, the most obvious aspect being the 'War on Terror'. Without 9/11, we'd have no WoT and our current political language would be very different. That alone makes the issue very important, and I agree with other posters who say that if we could establish dishonesty with this issue, we could then push for something more substantial - maybe even government that represents our interests. It's time for people to stop seeing 9/11 as a potentially discredited line of inquiry. I believe it's still a hugely relevant topic, and could be the key to toppling over this administration and instilling a sense in people that your government won't perform for you unless it is carefully watched, which could only be healthy for democracy.

He gets to the point that counter-recruiting may actually be productive. I would also add that a serious effort to get a real 9/11 commission could also be productive. As for the rest of the of the protests/movement-building, etc., I find it useless. I'd rather spend my time on productive things.

Maybe Osama did it, maybe he did not. I think this question is irrelevant. Or why should it be more relevant to us than to the U.S. government when even General Richard Myers said that "the goal [of the U.S. campaign in Afghanistan] was never to get Bin Laden" (AP, April 5th, 2002). What I think is more relevant is the fact that he never could have prepared these attacks in a cave somewhere in Afghanistan. Every serious analyst says that the attacks were impossible without the support of a government and/or of an intelligence agency. The Times of India (August 1th, 2001) has revealed that the leading hijacker, Mohammed Attac, had received $100,000 by the then chief of the pakistani secret service ISI, Lt Gen Mahmud Ahmad. But when you blame Pakistan, you still have the american connection, because ISI has always been closely linked to the CIA. What is even more disturbing is the Mahmud Ahmad himself was in Washington for a visit when the 9/11 attacks happened (Guardian, September 15th, 2001). Surprisingly (or not?), there has been any serious investigation of this "Pakistani Connection".

I think it is best that I don't start debating the 9/11 facts. It is pointless for me to do so with someone who will probably reflexively deny everything I say. It's the same feeling as you would have trying to tell a Republican there was no connection between Saddam and OBL. You say,"The urgent issue is that global violence can either escalate or decline, depending on whether people raise their voices in dissent or spend the time examining the physics behind the falling of WTC7." I don't believe people dissenting is going to effect Bushes next move one tiny bit. People like Chomsky have been bringing up their issues for decades, and here we are. What would be different if Chomsky never wrote a word? The left will be calling for a pullout of Iraq (and Iran, Syria, Venezuela, etc) for the next 20 years, and events will unfold as if they didn't say a word. But if people were to start calling for a new 9/11 commission (and notable authors supported this) and started backing people like Cynthia McKinney in the House -who also wants a new investigation, events could unfold that could actually stop Bush (and whoever comes after him). People in this country need to get outraged over something if they are going to be motivated to act. This outrage only will come from a widespread realization of who's behind 9/11. Otherwise, it will be the same 3.5% of the population moaning about the issues until the planet is gone.

To my knowledge, Bin Laden took responsibility for the 9-11 attacks on or about October 30, 2004, in a videotaped warning to Americans, in which he said that the best way to avoid a repeat attack would be to withdraw from involvement with the Muslim territories. In a previous statement he offered a truce with Europe on roughly the same grounds, if memory serves. There is no way for us to know the truth with absolute certainty, in much the same way that I cannot personally know whether gravity is different on the moon, but I presume that it is as described. And I agree that it is beyond perplexing how anybody could manage to fly a plane into the Pentagon. But, on balance, I side with the basic outline of the official story. It's possible that there were distortions and omissions. And it's part of the historical record that what followed was massive psychological manipulation, garnering public support for wars that the neo-conservatives have been salivating to launch for ages. That support is now being severely undercut by people like Cindy Sheehan, toward whom the administration cannot use its standard reflex of accusations of unpatriotic attitudes, since her son died in combat. That's where we are today. The urgent issue is that global violence can either escalate or decline, depending on whether people raise their voices in dissent or spend the time examining the physics behind the falling of WTC7.

Anyone that can believe this story, especially if they have any knowledge of the military protocols used for intercepting aircraft, is the real conspiracy theorist. After reading the evidence for government complicity in 9/11 for 3 years, I am very comfortable with this theory being by far the most logical (the evidence is pretty indisputable when looked at as a whole). Actually, I find your “man in the cave” conspiracy theory pretty silly. It all depends on your biases, worldview, etc. The psychological reasons most Americans will not accept the idea of government complicity are very basic. But if you can open your mind and simply look at the evidence, the answer is clear. I've read the British government's “evidence” that OBL was responsible for 9/11. It's a complete joke. There simply isn't any. If OBL was captured and could get a FAIR hearing, the case would not even go to trial.

It is also the first steel framed building in history to collapse solely due to fire), I will give up my crazy "conspiracy thoery" and commit myself to the luny bin. This is only one piece of evidence out of hundreds, but it's the most obvious problemm with the "official" conspiracy theory, IMO.

I also don´t agree to the claim that the questioning of the events on 9/11 is somehow diverting attention. Of course there are more urgent issues, like the outrageous scandal of 100.000 people dying of hunger every day. But still no one should overlook the fact that U.S. foreign policy since 9/11 has been framed around the framework provided by Samuel Huntingtion, the "Clash of Civilization". Too many people are still convinced that people "out there" hate "us" and want to kill "us" and that therefore there is somehow a justification for going "out there" and "kill the terrorists". This is pretty much like the Cold War. Then you were put before the choice of either being "with us" or being with the "communists". Now it´s either you´re "with us" or you´re with the "terrorists". You can get out of the trap when you begin to question the validity this framework. And in my opinion the key to it is the official narrative of 9/11!

Dear adamrotmil: OK, one little sentence is of course NOT an evidence. But even without going intotechnical details about what happened on that day, which is in my opinion indeed pretty much a waste of time because for this you need REAL experts, I find it very plausible that the Bush Kabal is somewhat related to these events. All the plans the Bush administration implemented after 9/11, like the War in Afghanistan, the curtailment of civil liberties with the PATRIOT Act had already been drafted a long time before it happened. It is as if they had just waited for these attacks! And at the same time I have just recently heard that there is so much evidence about cooperation between NATO, the CIA and Islamic extremists in Yugoslawia during the 1990s -including Osama Bin Laden himself!- up to the war in Kosovo (and I wouldn´t be surprised if this cooperation still goes on today) that I just ask myself, why would these people turn against those who pay them?

I appreciate the specific cite of a quote, but it doesn't follow that the U.S. would cause a new Pearl Harbor in order to upgrade the military. To interpret the quote as evidence would require a nearly schizophrenic perception of connections between unrelated items. The Project for a New American Century people, of course, are pigs, the whole lot of them. I think we're on the same page on that part. But as for 9-11, for whatever it's worth, I think the administration took advantage of our natural fear and solidarity to push its agenda, after the attacks occured. I'll go this far: administrations play "war games" all the time, that is, they plan for what-if scenarios. I'd not be surprised if they had a plan prepared in advance to exploit public emotions (as they did and continue to do), but I have to maintain that it doesn't follow that they would have needed to cause 9-11. That's just my view, and I accept yours, too, without agreeing with it. I'd bet we agree about a lot of other issues.

I will not go too much into the details, but just look at this: One year before 9/11 the "Project for a new american century" where you find all the NeoCons and the Bush Cabal publishes a Report called "Rebuilding America´s Defenses". There you find this very nice little sentence: "Further, the process of transformation [of the U.S. military] is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event - like a new Pearl Harbor." And all of a sudden this "new Pearl Harbor" just happens - provided by an organization full of former CIA assets. It is a proven fact by the way that Islamists still provided their help to NATO during the War in Kosovo (by marking targets for bombing etc.) - just two years before 9/11! I just don´t believe why people like you just don´t want to admit the obvious!

Mr Chomsky, please answer me the following: If, heaven forbid, analysts' estimates are true and a nuclear strike was to on US soil in the coming years, will you urge people not to waste their time asking questions of the government actions which prompted such a strike? Just because an event took place in the past, that doesn't, by definition, make it a smokescreen to divert attention from more pressing, current issues. Granted, focussing on possible government complicity in 9/11 to the exclusion of all else is unhealthy and unhelpful. But the WTC attacks are still so recent and so relevant that to ignore the numerous inconsistencies and the wealth of evidence that contradicts the party line is almost to become a part of the compliant, mainstream media of which you have always been so critical. Any revelation now which demonstrated government/mafia involvement in the JFK assasination would be scandalous, granted, but would in truth be something of a historical titillation: something to be discussed around the water cooler in hushed tones, but with little tangible impact on our world. Any such revelation about 9/11 would be enough to put the brakes on this current slide toward potential nuclear apocolypse, and would certainly open the eyes of the Fox-led masses to what their government elect is capable of. I, for one, would welcome such a "smokescreen".

I am reacting strongly over this subject because I think ethnocentric thinking is part of a mindset that is at the core of the problems the US has right now. After all the “Saddam gassed his OWN people” talk, imagine Americans finding out that Bush also killed his own people. I think it would lead to some introspection and some changes.

To bwong: Nowhere in my posts did I compare people that one may know personally to strangers. I was comparing strangers in this country to strangers in another country. Upon re-reading my posts I think this was clear. In the case of two strangers I do not choose sides based on lines drawn on a map. This is not a PC statement, but how I really feel. How much I care about someone is based on their values, personality, etc. I care more about Hugo Chavez than I do Bush, even though Bush is American. If two strangers are unknown and from different countries, I care about them equally (I may care slightly more about a foreigner based on the general traits I talked about above). And if I know someone personally, of course I care for them far more than any stranger. And a lot of that is based upon the same moral judgments, and not solely upon the fact that I know them. I was mainly addressing issues such as the common feeling that most people have that the 3,000 people who died on 9/11 was the biggest tragedy in the history of the world, but the 1.5 M that died in Iraq over the past decade is not worth a second thought. (Or was justified.)

I feel closer to people from other cultures thousands of miles away that share my ethics, that violence, discrimination and exploitation are wrong, than I do with my racist, wife-beating, war-favoring next door neighbor. We live on the same street, but ideologically (where it counts) we are a million miles apart.

I judge people on their morals, personality, etc., not on where they happen to have been born. Actually, one thing I would judge someone on is how much they agree with your last post. “On the whole”, people in other countries have a much more international world view and are much more apt to disagree with you than the average American. So I would, and do (in general), feel closer to someone from another country, based mainly on the general trait of Americans being self-entered, materialistic, arrogant, racist, and violent. (I say this as a general statement, knowing that there are millions of Americans who are not like this. Although different nationalities may have different traits, I do not over-generalize. Again, it is usually Americans who do this: i.e., if one Muslim is a terrorist, all 1.4 billion Muslims must be.) The 3,000 people who died on 9/11 are no more important to me than any one of the 30 sets of 3,000 Iraqis who died in this war (or the 500 sets of 3,000 who died over the past decade due to sanctions and the first war). So in your world, should a person living in Maine feel closer to a Canadian or a San Diegan. Is the important thing distance or whether or not you are within the same arbitrary line drawn on a map?

I think there are very precise reasons why Mr. Chomsky will not put inot question the official 9/11 story: His thesis in his book 9-11 and in the film "Power and Terror" is that on this day America has simply reaped the terror it had sowed all over the world over half a century. I think Mr. Chomsky would probably be disappointed if it would come out that the U.S. Government has again sowed terror so that it can sow even more terror abroad! Mr. Chomsky has a very similar position on the JFK assassination: He sticks to the official version because this mysterious assassination made Kennedy a hero among liberals and progressives, despite his not-so-liberal record as president! (Lyndon Johnson, a president most liberals and progressives despise was a much more liberal record than Kennedy!) But expect these two points I agree with Mr. Chomsky on nearly everything else!

to r4d20: MCorbin brought up the issue of relative severity of violent crimes. This has nothing to do with personal grief with the lost of a loved one who may have been involved in one of the crimes. I have lost a loved one to a violent crime that involved only that person. I was very saddened by it. That does not mean that that crime was greater than the US military killing 100,000 Iraqis. Can you understand the difference?

What kind of inhuman monster is actually more saddend by the death of his loved-ones than the deaths of unknown people thousands of miles away? When my friends brother died in a car accident I had half a mind to walk up to her crying parents at the funeral and tell them how damn insensitive and disgusting they were to be crying their hearts out now, when they never cried over the Iraqi children who were dying of sanctions everyday. I didn't, but I'll regret it everyday. :P

It's interesting the response you will get from people here in the US if you suggest that if Bush and Co. were involved in 9-11 that it would not be the worst of their crimes. I have offended more than one person by suggesting this. The objection is: what could be worse than knowingly causing the deaths of 3,000 innocent US civilians? This kind of response suggests to me two likely thought patterns: Either they are so insulated from the world outside the US, and with the media white-washing of the war, they are simply in denial of the magnitude of death and destruction happening daily in Iraq, or worse, they place a higher value on American lives than on other people's lives.

Chomsky's final point about diverting attention seems to be a little beyond the scope of the Bush Administration but never the less plausible. However, intentionally or not, such information has successfully diverted valuable resources away from other important matters. One should only devote time to a conspiracy theory if the evidence is overwhelming or such a theory is highly probable--in this case neither is present.

Yes, the man on the street has not done much. I wish I knew what would motivate people. The main reason I'd like to see the real people responsible for 9/11 prosecuted is for general reasons of justice. If this event ended up educating the masses and inspiring them to action, I would be happy with that and have no moral problem with it. I don't care what instinct I am appealing to. Logic is not going to work with most people. Also, I think its very possible Chomsky realizes there is White House complicity in 9/11 and does not want to say it. To illustrate: I read a story where Howard Zinn said in a speech "...there is nobody who would not agree that the Serbs committed widespread atrocities against Albanians...". Afterwards, an audience member replied "Not only do I disagree, but in fact most people in the world would disagree with your assessment of Kosovo." He asked Zinn why he accepted the media hype about the Serbs so uncritically and why he never questioned the validity of the anti-Serbian atrocity stories which were obviously the key to building support for intervention. Zinn's reply was "if one got too nit-picky about such details (e.g., whether the Serbs are mass murderers) the public wouldn't take one seriously." Basically, if you want to maintain you intellectual status, you can't go to far with what you say. This is true even more so with 9/11. Anybody questioning 9/11 will be attacked relentlessly. Like Cynthia McKinney.

not that chomsky exegesis is that important, thought i may as well chime in. if chomsky says the official story is the most credible one, i'm sure that's what he believes. he's said a lot of things that would "hurt book sales" or make people think the government lied to him. myself, i don't really have enough information to have too meaningful an opinion about 9/11. i do however agree with chomsky that 9/11 would pale in comparison to the administrations many other crimes.

Concerning the "such efforts are futile" comment: I'm not suggesting convincing one person at a time, but a real 9/11 commission could take care of the job of untangling the 9/11 mystery. And if some prominent authors started calling for a serious inquiry, maybe it could happen. Two thirds of New Yorkers already want to see a new 9/11 commission. The issue of human survival is here right now (with global warming as well), and I still don't think many people care or see enough people that are compelled to action as a result. Most Americans are ready to follow Bush off the edge of a cliff. I think what does compel the average person to act is when they are attacked and when their action is "patriotic". A realization that our government attacked its own people would activate both instincts. The outrage that would result would be tremendous. I think this is the only thing that would compel most Americans to act.

Beautifully put. I agree that those are his reasons, and for him, that's probably the best route. It will probably require $120/barrel oil and another 9/11-type act to get more people to stop and think, again, about the ramifications of our inability to take responsibility for the (in)actions of our leaders. Still love reading Chomsky, though.

For me the answer to this question is that there is as absolutely no chance of changing US foreign policy by focusing on the issues mentioned by Chomsky and yourself. The proof of this is right in your question: the crimes are right out in the open. The problem is noone cares. People in this country are uninterested in anything other than what they're going to purchase next. I can spend the rest of my life pointing out to people what US foreign policy does to the rest of the world, but it will do no good. At most maybe I can motivate someone to get off the couch and vote, and he'll vote for a Democrat and nothing changes. I agree the chance of a widespread "9/11 awakening" are about 0.1%, but I disagree with what the effect of that would be. I definitely think that people's world view would change. I am able to talk to people about foreign policy, but if I bring up government complicity in 9/11, a brick wall goes up. That is because I am attacking their world view. People will literally turn their heads rather than to look at evidence of 9/11 complicity. If you could tear down these walls and unleash the resulting outrage (too bad people can't get outraged about other nations suffering), I think it could spark real change.

If irrefutable evidence of White House involvement in 9-11 were to surface, that would certainly change things. However, that change may be impeachment, imprisonment, etc. but I don't know about destroying people's world views. Chances are the events following impeachment would be nearly identical to the ones you suggested previously: The Democrats would take power and continue the illegal conquests in the Middle East. If we look at the JFK assassination and speculate government involvement, look at all the effort put into cracking that case, look at all the compelling evidence refuting the official account (just like 9-11) and look where it's gotten us: nowhere. Why not focus our attention instead at the illegal, impeachable, crimes being committed right out in the open instead? Nothing we do will bring back to life the victims of 9-11, but we can still save lives if we reverse our disastrous foreign policies.

Chomsky says that we should not waste our time addressing matters concerning 9/11 and instead concentrate on "more serious" matters. As an example of a worthy topic he talks about how the US adventure in Iraq has greatly increased the probability of future terrorist attacks which can possibly have dire consequences. Yes, this is true. But from the polls I've been seeing people are already realizing this both in the US and the UK. So what? Where is that going to lead us? Maybe in three years we'll elect a Democrat who will continue with the same policies we've always had? I think a public realization of issues such as this will lead nowhere. On the other hand, a realization that the administration was responsible for 9/11 would be monumental! Chomsky says, "the involvement of the Bush administration in 9/11, if it could be supported, would amount to very little." I can't believe he could say that. AN awakening of that kind would destroy peoples world view and force them to wake up from their stupor. The consequences of this could quite possibly lead to real change. The symptomatic details of the larger system have many interesting/horrifying facets, relations, and details to think about. But focusing on the trees we may get lost in the larger forest, or not even see it! Chomsky wishes to spend his limited brain power and time focusing on what he thinks appears most credible to him. He has kindly respected anyone elses desires and inclinations to pursue what find most compelling, and if they turn over some nice chunk of evidence, he may use that detail as part of an example in explaining how the larger system works. Nobody has to agree with every stance Noam takes, I don't, although on most things I do. Personally, Larry Silverstein's comments about pulling WTC building 7 on 911, even though demolishinga building takes weeks to months of planning, among other things, have caught my at-tension. Pay atension..... Look at me, look at me, my names alex jones! Whatever the consensus reality deems worth paying attention too, like 911, still shouldn't stop us from exposing the far more serious and "911's" -- that go on a 1000 times a day!

My opinion a couple of years ago was the same as Chomsky's: Government involvement in 9-11 was extremely unlikely because of the high probability of leaks. However, since then I have heard convincing arguments that have compelled me to reconsider. One such argument is that the Manhattan Project was a secret government project involving over 130,000 participants and was not leaked. There are lots of other arguments and pieces of evidence that I can't think of right now, but their impact has not been lost on me. I agree with Chomsky. It seems more productive to focus on what is being done out in the open (although illegally), resulting in far more deaths than 9-11 and risks of total extinction.

Regarding the last two posts: I agree that Chomsky must realize that Bush is reponsible for 9/11 but is staying clear of the issue to maintain his status along with his book sales. Initially I agreed that this is the best thing for Chomsky to do. He appeals to a large audience and helps to shift opinion on one level, and at the same time the more "fringe" writers are available to those who seek a more complete picture. I thought that it's best to have both groups available to appeal to as many people as possible. But then I thought - if we want to see real change what is the best thing? People like Chomsky have been writing books for 40 years and look where we are. Pointing out what the US does in the rest of the world doesn't seem to work. People don't care, at least in sufficient numbers to make a real difference. They only care when it hits close to home - when it affects them personally. If people were to ever wake up to the truth about 9/11 in sufficient numbers, I think a real revolution could happen and real change could take place. I think we need prominent writers to tell the truth regardless of what it does to their reputation or book sales.

And it would be the most credible one when you're not questioning it or looking for alternatives in the first place. Like Bulldog, I too have a profound respect for Mr. Chomsky and was please to find this, (the most elaborate so far), response to his position on 9/11. Additionally, I too believe that Mr. Chomsky is wise to stay out of the 9/11 arena and maintain his status as a credible professor commanding respect of "McLuhan-esque" proportions. However, most North American citizens are not using the same "World Map" as Chomsky, and therefore are not viewing the world with the same understanding. I'm with Bulldog in considering 9/11 as a primer for "Politics" and "Terrorism".

Mr. Chomsky is a very smart man. Smart enough to stay out of a pariah-making issue like 9/11. I suppose that he knows good and well that 9/11 was engineered by the Bush administration, but is smart enough to stay clear of the matter. He is right, it does divert attention from the other issues. However, I believe it is the lynchpin to understanding everything that has gone on over the past five years. Once you reveal 9/11, the rest is easy. I think Mr. Chomsky is an American hero. But I respectfully disagree with him re: 9/11.

I think what chomsky is refering to by saying "undertaken with the expectation" is that it would only make sense that if our incursion into the middle east is the reason for the terriorist attacks, then to increase the level of incursion would increase the occurance of terror attacks. This comes after the publics response to 9/11 was to rally around the flag and seek retribution and to lift a, up to that point terrible presidancy to near record level favorability. It allowed for increased trust of a president desperatly in need of it. It also increased the governments ability to tighten down on its citizens, I think all of us will agree that anything that increases governmental power will be approved of by any governmental official. Seeing all of this the response would obviously be to take the maveric actions that would possible increase the likelihood of future attacks. This is because it would not hurt any government official if this did happen, in fact it would help them. Also, in the interim it would all for a further expansion of our empire and an increase of military expenses that would help the economy and the campaign donors in the defense business. Just what I think he meant.

Chomsky is intentionally vague and does not mention any sources. That is so you will read into it what he hopes you will read into it. And I doubt anyone noticed -- his statement about 9/11 may be the first time Chomsky has ever credited any US administration with truthfulness. Of course he minimizes it by saying it makes no difference anyhow if 9/11 was a conspiracy or not.

The toll in Iraq is nearing 1,830, of our soldiers. You add that figure to all the Iraqi dead (though no official count exists), and it's something like 26,830, not counting Iraqi soldiers in the initial invasion (no one seems to care to tally them). Adjusting for population, that's over a couple hundred thousand Americans, nearly 80 times the magnitude of the toll from 9/11. It's grotesque in the extreme to justify (retroactively) a war, in the name of the terror attacks against us, that has resulted in a larger (numerically speaking, at least) tragedy -- to only further increase the risk of future 9/11-like attacks. And it's also insane. We are good, rational people; why are we doing this to ourselves? As for the September 11 conspiracies, there are several, some worth comment and most not: the most visible is the idea that what crashed into the Pentagon was not a 747 but a missile; one of the asinine ones is one I saw in a bumper sticker, which read "Bush Caused 911". Lunacy.

Whether or not I have determined which 9/11 scenario is most credible, I completely agree with the idea that dwelling on the government's possible complicity in the attack is counterproductive. We are in the midst of an enormous upheaval within the power structures of government, military/intelligence, as well as domestic law enforcement. We would be better served to focus on the dangers this administration is setting us up for with it's foolish foreign policy, and it's rollback of civil rights here at home. Working out some complex conspiracy theory, one that may, or may not, be true, is a waste of mental energy, and could turn out to be a smokescreen. We have more compelling issues to focus on.

We are always on the defensive (despite being exponentially the strongest and richest). -The media paints a “close enough” picture of reality. We have more freedom of speech than anyone, so how could any truth be kept from the public? -Opposing war means siding with the enemy and supporting war means well wishing the troops. If you oppose a government sponsored war you are contributing to disunity and then the terrorist win. -US military and secret service are as humane as possible, but it's OK for them to break rules to catch terrorists. -Admitting to mistakes ruins our credibility to the world.

Concentrating on 9/11 makes it seem like an isolated event caused solely by the Bush administration. There is a much greater need to expose the entire system that runs on war, in which democrats are as much to blame as the republicans and the public is continually pumped with fear and false pride, while their control over the government slips away day by day. Yes, the current administration is more extreme and blatant with regards to their claims to war, but if nothing is done to stop them we can only expect this to be a trend that will not stop with Bush, but start and get worse and worse with the successors to the Oval Office. The 9/11 “conspiracy theory” may create some mistrust of Bush and his cronies, but does it dismiss the fundamental ideologies that the country has followed during the last century:

Contrary to the popular understanding, he saw something else at work in the human psyche than self interest, regardless of class or creed: "It is a stronger power, a more forcible motive, which exerts itself... It is from him only that we learn the real littleness of ourselves, and the natural misrepresentations of self-love can only be corrected by the eye of this impartial spectator." The actual mechanisms of human behaviour were just as mysterious in Smith's time as they are now, but the point, I think, is still relavant. People can and do think in terms of principles based on mutual recognition and respect. And they can pressure their governments to do the same, particularly when they feel their government is counterposed to their interests. Talk about Bush complicity in this or that, or government misdeeds on domestic soil, contribute to a healthy public mistrust of power, even if the scandals themselves are comparatively minor. In fact, 911 conspiracy theories may well be a symptom of a general suspicion about powerful institutions in American society. The fact that domestic info-war officials considered declassifying examples of government misdeeds in order to manage public opinion is actually kinda promising.

On this principle alone, public concerns about the conduct of the state in far away places can be assauged. Hence the concern about 911 and the stalwart maintenance of a "volunteer army". A leak about the grassy knoll would do for the political-minded what a celebrity marraige does for the working poor and the grey-collared cubicle classes.
