Hello,

Blogs are a familiar feature on the internet - where users post content in an accumulating manner, with comments, and search options, etc. They facilitate expression and exploration, and via attached comments, also debate and synthesis.

Reading and
Navigating Blogs

Our blogs are quite powerful. Each writer can post, as is typically the case. Sustainers who have the option can also post, however. All Blogs appear in the blog system, and sometimes also in content boxes the top page of ZNet - and always via the left menu of the top page - and can be found via searches, etc.

Commenting on blogs follows the blogs, attached at the bottom, and blog comments, like all others, are also visible in many places that show comments including in the forum system. In addition, the entire blog system gathers content for everyone - but one can look at the accumulating content in many ways.

  • For example one can look at one writer's efforts - so one is seeing what is effectively a blog system for that one writer, or Sustainer.
  • One can also look at the content by topic, seeing blogs that are tagged as being about a certain topic - or place, as well. Thus, when doing that, it is a blog system about a topic, or a place, with many contributors.
  • One can look at only writer blogs, or only sustainer blogs, as well.
  • One can look at blogs for particular Groups, too.

All this is easily done using the left menu. Searches allow even more variables and refinements.

Creating Blog Posts

If you are a Sustainer with permission, and are logged in, you will see a link in the left menu for you to post a blog - and you can use that to post one, and then tag it various ways (such as with a topic or place, or a group tag), and once you do, it is in the system with you as the author.

You can also use the console button to the left to post a blog - anytime and from anywhere in the site, as long as you are logged in.

Meanwhile, enjoy the blogs - and, by the way, if you are a Free Member or a Sustainer with a ZSpace page, of course you can put one or more content boxes on it, pulling blog links of any sort you may want to filter for, for example, by you or by your friends or by others - and by topic, about places, for groups, etc.

Wonderful Internet Sources for Leftists!

I have written a number of pieces about the ills of the Internet, and particularly those of Facebook and Twitter, of late, so I thought I might balance it out with a more positive piece. However, since everyone knows the general benefits of online connection, a general listing of such benefits has little point. Thus, instead, here is a guide to some sites of special merit and value - at least in my eyes. Maybe such a list will be a bit of a service for those who are not yet acquainted with these in some cases somewhat hard to find offerings.

Of course there are other sites that are politically informative, inspiring, relevant, etc. - not to mention sites that have nothing much to do with politics but are quite helpful or useful in other ways - about which I will have nothing to say here. Hopefully without offending anyone left off, this short list of will be helpful for typical users of ZCom. If readers have other suggestions, by all means append them via a comment!

My apologies that these are all English language sites - I can’t read anything else, sadly, and so can’t first hand comment on anything else.

TomDispatchThe writing of Tom Englehardt is itself enough to warrant regular visits - but the Tom also amasses work by others, always in depth, always clearly and cogently written, always on the mark. A few pieces each week, but typically each is sterling. Z republishes nearly every one... but there is much else on the site to edify and inspire...

New Left ProjectNew Left Project based in the UK, seeks - via its website - to contribute to and facilitate broad-based campaigning for progressive political change, in line with the values, beliefs and opinions set out above. Their focus reflects that they are UK-based, but also that they recognise and value the long-standing internationalist tradition in progressive politics. Content is very much in the same Channels as Z...\

Great Post! Another?

By Dozzi, Raphael at Aug 09, 2011 17:42 PM

Though this may be out of place with regards these particular resources.  I have been observing a lot of the work by the Transcend network and Johan Galtung.  They are an NGO peace mediator and his organization says a lot of cool things I think.

The URL is: www.transcend.org

Check it out and tell me what you think.

World Socialist Website

By Stern, Jerome at Aug 07, 2011 22:49 PM

I can imagine several reasons why Michael did not mention this site, though I doubt he is unaware of it. For those who want to try, the address is www.wsws.org. Personally I have come to use it as my daily newspaper- it is the first thing I read in the morning. I should add that I am not a member of the associated parties (Socialist Equality Party- branches in various countries), nor am I endorsing those parties or suggesting anyone join them.

Unlike Michael, Chomsky, etc., until fairly recently, say about 2000, I was just an increasingly pissed off social democrat. The experience of a neoliberal Labour government starting in 1997, and starting to seriously read Chomsky's political writings about the same time, finally crystallised a change which had been building for some time. The wsws site has contributed to my becoming more radical still. I now see no point in joining campaigns which hope to 'reform' our system. I think it needs to be overthrown, not at some indeterminate point in the future, but urgently. I am not persuaded by arguments in support of democratic centralism as a party structure, but I think that in a sense there should be vanguard parties, whose purpose should not be to aspire to power but to lead by democratic persuasion to raise the conciousness of the majority of people to see that only by fighting to overthrow capitalism from this point on, can they defend themselves against the class war which they are currently losing in most of the world. In this respect, I think wsws can be quite helpful. It requires critical reading, but its biases are open and evident. Michael would say it is sectarian. Yes, it is and I happen to think that is a good thing. I am no friend of false 'unity' among supposedly like-minded groups who really profoundly disagree about their analysis of the world and how to respond to it. Every such group is entitled to their position, but not to hide their views from public criticism and analysis, and if that criticism is sometimes personal, then so be it. No doubt it can be argued that this can be confusing for ordinary people and this is true: But if one believes in democracy it is ultimately the people who must decide what position to accept and act upon.
