Within the global system of national states, borders do not affect everyone similarly. For a small, select group they are mere formalities. Business people, government officials, certain states' armed forces, tourists, and the personnel of legitimated international governmental and non-governmental organizations, for instance, traverse them practically at will and with very little thought. On the other hand, borders never leave others alone. In particular, for people assigned a 'migrant worker' or 'illegal' status in the countries in which they live, work, and sometimes die, borders follow them to school, to work; indeed they encounter borders in every aspect of their lives...

From Wikipedia: The thesis of the book is that the policies of unfettered capitalism pursued by the west for the last 50 years has largely failed, since the underlying purpose of the creation of wealth is happiness, and Hamilton contends that people in general are no happier now than 50 years ago, despite the huge increase in personal wealth. In fact, he suggests that the reverse is true. He states that the pursuit of growth has become a fetish, in that it is seen as a universal magic cure for all of society's ills. Hamilton also proposes that the pursuit of growth has been at a tremendous cost in terms of the environment, erosion of democracy, and the values of society as a whole, as well as not delivering the hoped for increases in personal happiness. One result is that we, as a society, have become obsessed with materialism and consumerism.

In her latest book, award-winning scientist and activist Dr. Vandana Shiva argues that genetic engineering and the cloning of organisms, far from being socially useful, are "the ultimate expression of the commercialization of science and the commodification of nature." "In the era of genetic engineering and patents, life itself is being colonized," says Shiva. She describes the hidden history of genetically engineered organisms, from Herman the transgenic dairy bull, to Tracy, the genetically engineered sheep that "lays golden eggs." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
