Born in the United States, currently residing in Los Angeles, age 71. Have spent many years living abroad, including Italy, Germany, and Canada. Occupation: professor and writer. Received Ph.D. in political science at U.C., Berkeley in 1970. Taught at 11 universities, including Washington University, St. Louis, UCLA, USC, U.C., Irvine, Carleton University in Ottawa, and Antioch University. Currently professor of social sciences and film studies at National University, Los Angeles. Have been involved in progressive issues and movements since Free Speech Movement at Berkeley in 1964.
Involved since then to the present in many antiwar projects and movements.
Participated in series of environmental groups since first Earth Day of 1969.// Involved in variety of community organizations and movements since 1960s, including Socialist Community School in L.A.// Engaged in several broader political organizations, including I.S., SDS, NAM, Solidarity, and Greens.
Involved in alternative media/journalism since 1960s: writing for many alternative weeklies, leftist journals such as RA, SR, Theory and Society, and New Political Science, was political columnist for Village View (L.A.) during 1990s, hosted three programs at Pacifica/KPFK in Los Angeles starting in 1981.// Have written a number of books on critical social theory, European politics, the socialist tradition, critical film studies, and U.S. foreign/military policy.
Most recent books have focused on radical analyses of U.S. imperialism: Imperial Delusions, The Hollywood War Machine, and The Crimes of Empire.
Main attention is presently devoted to further developing a critique of U.S. imperialism and militarism as well as looking at ways to confront it. My hopes for the RSP include the opportunity to (a) learn more extensively about the perspectives of others, coming from diverse perspectives and experiences, who have been involved in the struggle for fundamental social change; (b) expand the intellectual and political space for sharpening my own analytical and strategic views; (c) enlarge our capacity (individually and collectively) to make connections spanning the many views, concepts, issues, and strategic visions that shape our world; and (d) create possibilities for other future projects along these lines.
