    Before turning to full-time writing, I was a BBC journalist (1977-2000). Set up the BBC Afghanistan office and was the corporation's resident correspondent in Kabul in the early 1990s. Also reported from Pakistan, Syria, Sri Lanka and India among other countries. Articles have appeared in publications like the Economist and the Daily Telegraph of London. Now a contributor to journals and newspapers, among them Al-Ahram, CounterPunch, George Mason University's History News Network, John Cole's Informed Comment and the Palestine Chronicle. Worked for the federal government in Washington in the 1970s and have taken a close interest in U.S. policy, great power rivalries, South and West Asia for more than 35 years.
