This is the community where changes are made to happen. My interests are in little things, little places, little steps that lead to great changes. I have turned away from consumerism, corporate entertainment and news, and the work-TV-shop rat race. What brought me to this point?
During the Bush-Cheney US presidency I watched with growing disquiet as they prosecuted preemptive wars that increasingly appeared to have religious motivations, continued Clinton's destructive "free trade" policies, and denied certain civil freedoms including habeas corpus. I struggled with their "war on terror" as I had with the Reagan's "war on drugs" which resulted in more drugs entering the US and vast increases in the number of black and hispanic Americans behind bars. Michelle Alexander's book The New Jim Crow helped me see the truth about the "war on drugs" and Naomi Klein's book The Shock Doctrine opened my eyes to what Bush-Cheney were doing. Articles by Chris Hedges made me see just how far we had progressed toward fascism. With the way now open for unlimited and unidentifiable political donations from corporations and cover groups both here and abroad, my hope for change is in individuals. Millions of people are the only remedy for millions of secret dollars funding our politics.
Two of the three authors just mentioned are here at ZNet; there are many more like them. Engage your mind and heart in the realities of resistance. And drop by this page occasionally to discover little things that make great differences.
