The Project for a Participatory Society Down Under (PPS-Down Under) seeks to join with international efforts to advocate, examine and support ideas and activities based on participatory values and vision.
PPS- Down Under is about four values: self-management, diversity, solidarity and equity, which not only inform our vision for an alternative society but the way we structure, organise and interact as a collective.
What do these values mean?
Ø SELF-MANAGEMENT: People ought to be able to have a say, (direct participation in decision-making) in the running of their lives, communities and workplaces in proportion to the extent they are affected by decisions in each arena. Ø DIVERSITY: People are diverse as a result of their cultures, personalities, preferences and in their experience of the world, to name a few. A good society or economy should recognise and facilitate the human expression and potential of this diversity, rather than hinder it.
Ø SOLIDARITY: We think, all things equal, a society and economy is better when co-operation, honesty and humanity towards fellow humans is encouraged by social and economic institutions. Callousness, greed and thuggish behaviour are not traits that should be rewarded.
Ø EQUITY: People should be rewarded for their sacrifices and the effort they expend, rather than lucky genetic traits, better tools, workplaces or life-chances, or deeds to property.
These values inform our vision of a better world, where they can find full expression in all spheres of society. A guiding example of this vision in the economic sphere is Participatory Economics (ParEcon) developed by Michael Albert and Robin Hahnel.
PPS- Down Under seeks to advocate and demonstrate meaningful participation in how we structure our societal organizations and institutions. Moving past outdated dogma and greedy self interest, our shared vision informs our strategy and structure as we seek to work with those from the bottom-up to change society. We hope to share this vision and values within
What Are We For?
Our Values- Equity, Solidarity, Diversity, Self-Management, Sustainability
Our Vision- A society where these values are fully expressed in society’s institutions and structures through the meaningful participation of all.
Our Strategy- Seeks ways to move from where we are to where we want to be. Our approach does not dismiss seeking reforms or revolution. However we do believe that revolutionary change occurs usually not from a violent outburst but via the long, dedicated work of creating, building and sustaining the change we seek.
