I am 49 years old and live in Manchester UK. but I'm originally from Ealing,London. I was brought up in a typically upper middle-class tory family. My father was a barrister although he had been a radical in his university days - my mother refused to marry him if he joined the CP. They met on a CND march to Aldermarston so you could say I owe my existence to the nuclear bomb. But when my mum died (when I was three) my dad seemed to forget all that so by the time I first became interested in politics he was a thatcherite tory. So I was educated at a 'public' (i.e. exclusive fee-paying private) school and hated it and started a gradual leftward drift which was much accelerated by being introduced, by a fellow student at Manchester University where I studied philosophy, to the political works of Noam Chomsky which is what has brought me to ZNet.
Despite my Chomskyian enlightenment many years ago now I haven't been as active as I should because I took the easy option of saying that I wasn't going to change anything so why bother and also being put off by the self-destructive sectarianism of the left. And after university I went thro' a period when I really thought exctasy was going to change the world so that was a scene I was involved in for too many years. Now I've got two young children (4 and 6) and soon when they realise how fucked up and unjust the world is I want to be able to say at least I've tried to do a bit altho' I'm far from optimistic about the future. It seems to me as far as the enviroment goes it's always going to be too little too late and then geo-engineering has the potential to be utterly catastrophic on an epic scale and politically an increasingly vicious neo-liberalism enforced by an increasingly embattled and therefore authoritarian corporate-run state.
