We have already responded to Edward S. Herman and David Peterson's article, "Riding the í¢Â€Â˜Green Wave' at the Campaign for Peace and Democracy and Beyond" criticizing our Question & Answer on Iran. In that response, we expressed our strong objection to being accused of serving the interests of U.S. imperialism. In their later reply they assure us that they were not suggesting that we were "witting" agents of Washington; we're relieved to learn this, though it is then a mystery why they asked if it is was just a coincidence that our views were identical to those of the U.S. government.

Right after the June 12 elections in Iran, the Campaign for Peace and Democracy issued a statement expressing our strong support for the masses of Iranians protesting electoral fraud and our horror at the ferocious response of the government. Our statement concluded: "We express our deep concern for their well-being in the face of brutal repression and our fervent wishes for the strengthening and deepening of the movement for justice and democracy in Iran." Since the elections, some on the left, and others as well, have questioned the legitimacy of and the need for solidarity with the anti-Ahmadinejad movement. The Campaign's position of solidarity with the Iranian protesters has not changed, but we think those questions need to be squarely addressed.

In a major setback for Pentagon plans to install a U.S. military radar base in the Czech Republic, the Czech government yesterday withdrew, at least for now (and possibly for good), its proposal to ratify an agreement on the base. Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek halted the ratification process when it appeared that the Chamber of Deputies was likely to vote to reject the agreement. According to Jana Glivicka, a leader of the grassroots “No Bases Initiative” that has been active in opposing the radar for more than two years, this was a very significant retreat, since the radar has been promoted as one of the key accomplishments of the current government.

For a number of years, plans have been in the works to establish a U.S. radar base on the territory of the Czech Republic. Czech politicians knew about these plans, but kept them secret from the voters until after the 2006 parliamentary elections were over. The proposed base, along with related interceptor missiles to be placed in Poland, is part of a new U.S. missile defense system in Europe, and as such represents a major stage in the emergence of a new Cold War.

Leaders and activists from several U.S. peace organizations, including the Campaign for Peace and Democracy, Peace Action, United for Peace and Justice, and Pax Christi, met with Czech Ambassador to the United Nations Martin Palous to express their support for demonstrations in the Czech Republic protesting the plans of the Czech government to host the radar for a U.S. anti-missile system. Below is the statement that the activists delivered to Ambassador Palous, followed by the Appeal for Support from the organizers of the Czech demonstrations, the No Bases Initiative

The statement was delivered by a delegation of U.S. peace activists on November 16, 2007 to Ambassador Martin Palous at the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the UN in Manhattan. It was in support of Czech demonstrations against a military base the US and Czech Republic plan to set up near Prague for radar for an anti-missile system that will be based in Poland. The demonstrations were scheduled for the following day in Prague and Brno. The delegation to the Czech Mission was organized by the Campaign for Peace and Democracy. In a historical irony, CPD had assembled U.S. peace leaders to meet with Czechoslovak representatives in the same building in November 1989 to protest the repression of student demonstrations in Prague -- demonstrations that culminated in the overthrow of the undemocratic regime in the former Czechoslovakia. We plan to publicize this statement widely in the coming weeks. Please add your name and support.

I would like to thank the Life After Capitalism group for organizing this gathering, a time of urgent need for international solidarity. This is indeed a frightening moment, when my government is trying to take advantage of the horrible events of September 11 to assert its predominance in an even more total way than it has up until now. Yet we just might be able to stop them. When I say “we,” I mean the movements in different countries, mutually reinforcing, that have already succeeded in putting the war juggernaut on the defensive. In January we marched in Washington D.C. and other U.S. cities; around the world last month more than a million people took to the streets to oppose and resist this war.

With the occupation of Iraq soon to enter its sixth year and the looming possibility of war against Iran, it's easy for Americans not to notice the Bush administration's attempt to expand the U.S. military presence in Europe. A new Cold War between the United States and Russia threatens. And the U.S. media is paying little attention.

It's hard to see how the Bush administration is going to win the war in Iraq. Despite all the official bravado, a cloud of doom is descending on the White House, and with good reason: international outrage is mounting at U.S. behavior at Abu Ghraib prison and throughout Iraq, more and more Americans are concluding that the war is going badly, and Iraq is proving uncontrollable with...
