When I was a kid growing up in Brooklyn the "left" was very different from today. In fact, almost 180 degrees different on the issues. The only thing the same is the ethical core. When I was a kid the USA (and the left) was aiming to be a melting pot, a family of man, in which all people were to be treated equal, that was our goal and that was the goal of the civil rights movement. What was wrong with America was that we were so far from the goal.
When I was a kid the left was in favor of the UN and eventually of a world government ---as an embodiment of the idea of the family of man and as a practical way to coordinate those things best coordinated internationally. Now shockingly, I read more and more "leftists" like Ralph Nader talking about the need to defend national sovereignty. I have even heard Michael Albert say the same thing. When I was a kid Esperanto was considered a good idea. Now I have had arguments on Z in which I was told that I was a totalitarian for wanting a more peaceful unified world. (I am an agent of the international bankers and the vile corporations? ---Who in fact support a more internationalist point of view)
When I was a kid the slogan was: "let the nation own the trusts". and the idea was that the heights of corporate business be nationalized and better yet following the IWW that the workers and consumers actually run all big corporations. As A kid I read tons of Science Fiction and I imbibed a technocratic view point. Let the engineers rule. Let us follow rational practices of a scientific nature. Now all I hear is bullshit about how small is beautiful and that we need to smash the big corporations -and big government- which suddenly have become the epitome of inefficiency and evil. In fact, the greatest evil in the world according to some "leftists" is WalMart! It is as if the so called left never read Edward Bellemy's Looking Backwards where he pictured a very large scale distribution system that would take advantage of economies of scale and greater efficiencies of distribution. It shocks me that the so called left is now espousing ideas which are the mainstream of the Republican/Libertarian Party and that Ron Paul and Pat Buchanan are new left heroes.
When I was a kid the far right was concerned about the control of the USA by the International Jewish Communist Banker Conspiracy. They were concerned about our lack of a gold standard and Jewish control of gold and about the Jewish Bankers controlling the Federal Reserve and the need to do away with the Federal Reserve. Now it is the idiot left joining in with this far right against the "New World Order". Totally amazing! And what is shocking is that Jews don't seem to know this history of the far right.
It is my hope that we can get the left back on track.
