Born in 1936 in Calcutta (India), and residing at present in Dehradun near New Delhi. Journalist by profession. Was an activist in the Indian Communist movement - as a member of the undivided Communist Party of India from 1953 to 1964, and as an underground member of the armed Naxalite party (Communist Party of India - Marxist-Leninist). Have been an activist in the civil rights movement in India since 1977, participating in investigations into incidents of violation of human rights in Kashmir, Punjab and Gujarat among other places. At present working as an independent researcher engaged in research on popular culture and social history of colonial Bengal. Publications include books and articles on the Left movement in India. Interested in the present project of `Reimagining Society', as I feel the need for reconceptualizing the vision of socialism in the post-Marxian stage of the movement, and in that light the necessity of reformulating the strategy and tactics of the future struggle for a socialist society. less
