Susan is coordinator of the Highlander Education Team and coordinates the Highlander Library/Resource Center. Susan grew up in East Tennessee and before coming to Highlander, Susan worked for ten years as a community organizer for Save Our Cumberland Mountains in East Tennessee. In 1979 she was a community researcher for the Appalachian Land Ownership Study. She came to Highlander in 1989 to coordinate the Environmental/Economic Program. She worked for ten years with the Tennessee Industrial Renewal Network, which began organizing around factory closings and from there, began coordinating worker-to-worker exchanges between Mexico and Tennessee factory workers which led to work on fair trade and globalization. In the 1990s, she led economy schools and coordinated Highlander’s Across Races and Nation project. She has served on the steering committee of the Economic Literacy Action Network and the Board of United for a Fair Economy. She is currently working on a historical timeline book about Highlander. She has helped to produce A Very Popular Economic Education Sampler, Unpacking Globalization: A Popular Education Toolkit with the Economic Literacy Action Network, and Across Race and Nation, a compilation of articles and educational materials relating to race and immigration in the Southern United States. She is currently working with the Highlander education team using popular education to support youth and intergenerational leadership, to address issues of race, globalization and immigration, and to continue economic literacy work to help groups understand and address economic issues more successfully. less
